The Major Case Squad was activated on Saturday, February 22, 2025, to assist the Cahokia Heights Police Department with the investigation into the shooting death of 15-year-old Charles E. Jones. Fourteen investigators worked out of the Cahokia Heights Police Department and followed up on more than 80 leads during the five-day activation.
Investigators determined that between 6:15 PM and 7:00 PM, there were three separate but related shooting incidents in the neighborhood behind Rally’s in the 1600 block of Camp Jackson Road. The initial altercation occurred near the intersection of Kenneth Avenue and Armand Drive. Two males, an 18-year-old, and 21-year-old, Dontae Jackson, were walking along the roadway when a white Nissan Maxima approached them. The Nissan slowed down, at which point there was an exchange of gunshots between occupants of the vehicle and one of the pedestrians. The Nissan departed the area, and the pedestrians returned to a residence in the 100 block of Lazarcherff.
One of the rear seat passengers, 15-year-old Charles E. Jones, sustained a single gunshot wound and was dropped off at Touchette Regional Hospital.
The Nissan returned to the neighborhood where there was another exchange of gunshots with the same 18-year-old and Dontae Jackson in the 100 block of Lazarcherff. Another 15-year-old occupant of the Nissan sustained a single non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The juvenile was also transported to the hospital and treated for his injuries.
A short time later, the occupants of the Nissan returned to the 100 block of Lazarcherff in a black Infiniti Q50 where the third exchange of gunshots occurred. There were no known injuries during this incident.
Charles E. Jones passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025.
